Otmar Alt

Otmar Alt was born on July 17, 1940, in Wernigerode. After studying painting at the Berlin Master School for Arts and Crafts and at the Berlin University of the Arts, he quickly rose to prominence in the artistic avant-garde.

Otmar Alt's artistic repertoire ranges from painting and graphic arts to sculpture. His experimental approach means he doesn't limit himself to painting and graphic arts, but frequently transcends the boundaries of different genres of visual art. He also designs everyday objects such as children's toys and creates imaginative sculptures from ceramics and Murano glass. He has presented his work to European audiences in over 250 solo exhibitions. He also creates designs for theatrical productions, stage sets, and costumes.

With his vibrant, joyful works, Otmar Alt has long captivated the art world, remaining true to his own distinctive visual language for years. His imaginative pieces often appear cheerful and playful at first glance, but upon closer inspection, profound and complex narratives unfold, prompting the viewer to reflect.

Through the strong abstraction and vibrant colors of his visual language, his figures seem to spring from a whimsical, fantastical world populated by imaginatively shaped humans, animals, and plants. This symbolic, fairytale-like approach allows the leading figure of the "New Figuration" movement to draw the viewer into his dream world. Alongside figurative motifs, he also creates a series of works with biomorphic, planar forms, which, through ornamental color, achieve a lively effect and fit together like puzzle pieces. It is this versatility in form and design that reflects Otmar Alt's experimental spirit, curiosity, and exuberance.

With the aim of supporting young artists, the established artist founded the Otmar Alt Foundation in 1991, which, among other things, provides young artists with studio space on the Otmar Alt estate through a scholarship program.
